Gang Seduction and Children Most at Risk
Gang Seduction is based upon perceptions of wealth, safety, independence, power and belonging. A pretty potent recipe for recruitment of wayward children and power hungry teenagers.
Which children then, are most at risk of 'Gang Seduction', being drawn into the siren song of corner street louts or die hard criminal organisations.
This could be any child, that feels misunderstood, stifled or is rebelling against rules and boundaries. However it is unlikely that they will become immersed in this type of culture for too long, as the rules and regulations that guide members, are generally a lot tougher than anything mom and dad can dish out.
That of course is the positive side. On a less positive note, those cildren who are left chronicaly unsupervised and uncared for are more likely to hang within the 'relative' safety of a gang. Typically they come from an environment of poverty, one parent households, alchoholic and or abusive parents. The less structure and dependability they have in their lives, the more likely it is that they may seek solace in the structure and conditional organistion of older teenagers who purport to offer the abused, an alternative family, that may seem to be less dysfunctional to them, than their own families. Children such as this are a hot target for Gang Seduction.
Others who suffer social rejection by the mainstream public, of his/her own social and ethnic background, as well rejection of their different religious beliefs and cultures, may feel excluded and threatened. Such a situation may drive these excluded kids into creating alternate cultures and or joining up with those that are already established with strong ring leaders. In this way they see protection in numbers and a sense of belonging. And in order to ward off any challenges or to find a niche for themselves, they behave and act tough, and are more likely to carry knives.
It would do us well to remember that rejected children will also do just about anything to fit in, from petty theft and vandalism to drinking alcohol and getting involved in both ends of the drug trade. From here it is a short leap to carrying weapons and using them. It is an oftimes, misapplied survival instinct that drives these types of behaviour and earns them the description of being feral.
Low self esteem can also perpetuate tribe like behaviour not just in the open but via mobile phones and the internet. This type of pack like behaviour, is now being widely reported and is potentially very harmful. Note the number of real cases of happy slapping and bullying on the internet. The internet and mobiles also provide the perception of protection to say and threaten others in whatever fashion kids have a want for. Kids gang up on the internet and on mobiles, bombarding the victim with all the viciousness of a virtual razor. Belonging to the Gang that attacks is a far better option for some kids than to buck the hate trend and end up being at the other end along with the victim. That is Gang Seduction on new wave technology.
Young teens and children with mobiles or any sort of messaging system should be under supervision both on messaging and receiving. Parents should know whose phone numbers are listed on their childrens phones.
